Mankind's Oldest Financial Institution: A Brief History of Pawn Brokering

Last updated 11 months ago

The use of pawn loans to make money is by no means a new concept. Some of the earliest records of civilization show evidence that pawning took place in societies around the world. Shockingly, in the thousands of years that pawn brokering has existed, the only things that have really changed are the items being pawned.

Here are some of the interesting points in pawn history:

Ancient civilizations established pawning. Histories from ancient China, Rome, and Greece all show that pawn brokering was in use as a part of everyday life. Because pawn loans are based solely on an item’s value and not a borrower’s credit, it is an accessible type of funding for all citizens. Therefore, it remained a popular practice for centuries.

The Catholic Church challenges the pawn brokering system. During the Middle Ages, when the primary commodity being pawned was clothing, the church made attempts to regulate the economy by outlawing pawnbroking. Eventually, the economy presented problems in the banking system that prompted a resurgence of pawning.

Queen Isabella pawns the crown jewels. There is no one type of person looking for a pawn loan, which is proven by one of the most famous pawns of all time. Before Columbus’s journey to the Americas, Queen Isabella pawned the crown jewels of Spain to fund the trip.

Pawning becomes a regulated financial practice. In the early 20th century, there were about 2,000 licensed pawnbrokers in the United States. The numbers of these institutions have only continued to rise, prompting state and federal regulations on the loan practice. Pawn loans make it possible for individuals with poor credit or no bank accounts to get loans in times of need, so they remain an integral part of American commerce and are regulated under the law.
